European Waste Reduction Week – Tips to prevent textile waste

It’s European Waste Reduction Week! This means that it’s time to think about sustainable resources and waste management and reduction.

The European Waste Reduction Week is a campaign to encourage all Europeans to partake in concrete actions to build a sustainable future. Every year, a jury gives out awards to the best initiatives to help with waste reduction.

This year’s theme is circular and sustainable textiles.

Although we aren’t going to give you fully-fledged project ideas, here are a few ideas to help you reduce your waste at home.

  1. Invest in a sturdy tote bag.

Everyone has these pesky plastic bags hanging around as well as thin tote bags we see as disposable. This is a big mistake as it is always a good idea to invest in a sturdy tote bag to reduce plastic and textile waste.

  1. Try buying second-hand

If you buy  some of your clothes second hand, not only will you save a lot of money but you might also find some unique pieces and you’re doing something great for the planet as you are reducing carbon emissions

  1. Don’t wash your jeans too often!

If your jeans are starting to smell but don’t really need a wash, fold them and leave them in the freezer for a while. The cold will destroy the bacteria causing the smell.
Alternatively, you can also wash your clothes and set your washing machine to a lower washing temperature. This will prevent damaging your clothes’ fibers therefore you won’t need to buy new ones!

  1. Upcycle your clothes!

How about picking up a new hobby? Upcycling your clothes is eco-friendly and very fun!

You can find a lot of fun tutorials on youtube or you can take some sewing classes to help you start your upcycling journey.

Patchworked jeans, glittered tops, redyed pants, there are so many options to make your clothes look as good as new! You can also consider getting them professionally tailored if you are clumsy.

  1. Donate your clothes or sell them!

Too many things in your wardrobe? One man’s trash is another man’s treasure! Donate your old clothes to charities or sell them on a yardsale, Facebook marketplace, Depop or Vinted.
